Many homeowners who are lucky enough to have an outdoor area love their greenery. However, there are a lot of people who are taking advantage of this additional land by building annexes to provide extra living space.
So popular is the thought of building extra rooms in gardens that applications for annexes are filed every 53 minutes, reported Your Mortgage.
Churchill Home Insurance used findings from a Freedom of Information Act that revealed 10,000 applications are made to councils every year, with the vast majority of these (82 per cent) being granted.
Head at the insurance provider Craig Rixon said: “Developing your own, new or converted garden annexe can be a very exciting process and is becoming ever more popular as people get increasingly savvy about home renovations.”
He went on to say they are ideal to enable older relatives to live close-by or simply to boost living space, as building an annexe or renovating a garage is “often a cheaper and easier alternative than moving to a larger property”.
Not only do garden annexes provide homeowners with lots more room, they have also been found to boost the value of three and four-bed homes by 27 per cent in the last five years.
Installing an annexe is not the only change Brits are keen to make to their gardens, as DIY Week recently reported new research from AA Financial Services in December that revealed landscaping was the second most popular project homeowners wanted to carry out before the end of 2018.
