January is traditionally a time for change, and a time when we start to plan for new projects over the coming 12 months. If tackling your garden and making it a more beautiful and usable space is on the agenda for your 2018, you may want to take a look at some of the gardening trends set to emerge this year.

The Times & Star recently highlighted some of the top things to look out for, according to a range of garden designers, writers and retailers.

Purple is a top colour that’s expected to appear in more of our outdoor spaces this year, with the colour experts at Pantone creating a ‘Verdure’ colour palette especially for our gardens. It features shades like berry-infused purple and eggshell blue, giving ideas for planting and ornamentation.

According to the newspaper, accenting your space with coloured pots and planting the likes of lavender or rosemary, which have purple flowers, are great ways to add this hue to your garden.

Decking, meanwhile, is another trend that’s set to see a resurgence, according to garden designer Kate Gould.

“People thought of the blue-painted wood and Ground Force, but a good hardwood deck is lovely, in the colour of wood,” she told the news provider.

This might not be a project you want to tackle alone though, so don’t be afraid to find help with decking in Lancashire if you need it.

When it comes to plants, succulents, cacti and multi-stem trees, such as parrotias and cercis, are among the things that are in demand at present.

In November, Country Living highlighted some of the big gardening trends for the year ahead, which included growing your own fruit and veg, and adopting the Japanese art of Wabi-sabi, whereby you accept the natural cycle of growth, decay and death in your outdoor space.
