How Gardening Could Improve Your Mental Wellbeing

Most people haven’t hesitated for a moment to bring out the barbecue this summer and enjoy the hot summer weather from the comfort of their backyard. You will probably have felt better for doing it, too. However, there will be some people that will overlook the benefit of improving their garden. Whether you’re based in Merseyside or Lancashire, gardening could be one of the best ways to make each day feel that little bit better.

According to a survey from the National Garden Scheme (NGS), the charity found that 85 per cent of people said that the gardening scheme had a positive impact on their mental health. The research showed that 80 per cent felt much better after visiting an NGS garden.

Emily Hodge, a health psychology specialist, commented: “With our worlds often full to the brim, whether from families, work or commitments, it’s important to take care of our mental wellbeing.”

Rather than visiting another person’s garden, you could turn gardening into a new hobby or a way to reduce the stresses of work. In fact, it’s one of the best ways to show some creativity, whether it’s picking the different flowers for a flowerbed or growing vegetables like tomatoes, onions or potatoes.

There is no doubt that everyone in the family will be able to enjoy the view and, more importantly, it might help you improve your mood while you’re working on it as a project. The next time you do pull out the barbecue, you’ll want to complete the experience for your friends and family by making sure your grass is mowed, the weeds are gone and using those fresh vegetables in your cooking!
